Xingyi Quans Pi Quan (Splitting Fist)

Xingyi Quan’s Pi Quan (Splitting Fist)

Central to Xingyi Quan practice are the five elements fists, which are the foundational techniques that give rise to all other movements. Pi Quan, as the first element, is associated with metal, resembling the action of an axe splitting wood.

Pi Quan's upper body-focused practice starts with a fixed stance. The practitioner stands upright with parallel feet at shoulder width. Key actions involve clenching the fists, rising and drilling followed by overturning and splitting. The emphasis on hugging elbows tightly onto the ribs ensures a cohesive and powerful execution.

For beginners, the Fixed Step Pi Quan simplifies footwork, providing a foundation for understanding. Breaking down the actions and executing them in a staccato manner, one begins to gradually synchronize the upper and lower body actions effectively. As practitioners progress, the Full Advancing Step is introduced, combining handwork with coordinated steps to create a seamless and flowing action. The classical saying 'shou jiao qi dao" (hands and feet arrive together) underscores the importance of synchronization.

Daily repetition and focused, long-term practice are imperative for mastering Pi Quan. The force vector, emphasizing a downward and forward motion, requires consistent attention. Developing harmony between the handwork and footwork and refining the body mechanics are a lifelong pursuit.
