Li Cunyi - Masters Series - Poster
This artwork features the renowned third-generation Xingyi Quan master, Li Cunyi. Born in Hebei province in 1847, Li Cunyi started his Xingyi Quan studies Liu Qilan. He also furthered his studies under the great Guo Yunshen. He was highly skilled with the saber which is why he was nicknamed Sing-Saber-Li. In 1894 he was appointed as a saber instructor for the Qing forces. After he moved to Beijing, he also studied Bagua Zhang under Dong Haichuan and primarily under Cheng Tinghua. Thus, starting a tradition of Xingyi Quan practitioners cross-training in Bagua Zhang and vice-versa. Li Cunyi was an outstanding martial artist and due to his broad-mindedness sought to unite Chinese martial artists. To that end he was one of the main people who established the Chinese Warrior (Martial Artists) Society in Tianjin.
He produced many skilled and notable students such as Huang Bonian, Hao Enguang, Shang Yunxiang, Ma Yutang and others. He passed away in 1921.
